StoryEmmeline Pankhurst, 1858-1928
The British social reformer Emmeline Pankhurst is remembered for founding the Women's Social and Political Union. Pankhurst urged thousands of women to demand their democratic right to vote, rather than to ask politely. In 1918, the Representation of the People Act gave voting rights to women over 30. Emmeline died on 14 June 1928, a few years after women were granted equal voting rights with men.
