Malala was born to a Pashtun family in Pakistan. At the age of 11–12, she started to write a blog under a pseudonym for the BBC Urdu detailing her life during the Pakistani Taliban occupation of Swat. In 2012, while on a bus, Malala and two other girls were shot by a Pakistani Taliban gunman for her activism. Over 2 million people signed the Right to Education campaign's petition, which led to ratification. Malala was announced as the co-recipient of the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for the right of all children to education. Having received the prize at the age of 17, Yousafzai is the youngest Nobel laureate.
