Dress Like the Paninaro

The Italian sandwich kids that ruled fashion in 1982 - and how to dress like them.

As a quiet rebel against the previous turbulent and crisis-ridden in Italy, a group of youngsters formed a subculture in Milan in the early eighties. They began to hang out on scooters outside sandwich bars such as Al Panino who they were named after, and later the burger joint Burghy on Piazza san Babila. The year was 1982 and these boys in their mid-teens were all stylishly dressed from top to toe; blue turned up Levi’s 501s, colourful Moncler puffer jackets or vests, Best company sweatshirts, chunky Timberland boots and Burlington socks.

Rejecting any form of social commitment as opposed to their generations’ punks or mods, they tried to enjoy life without worries. Their heroes were instead American cinema, British synth pop and designer labels. The subculture quickly spread across Italy; soon they even had their own magazines and pop songs dedicated to them.

You could think the style was just typical of rich kids splashing out on designer brands – however there was a very particular way of dressing. Think American preppy, Ivy League schools, with a twist.

So – how do you dress like a modern day Paninaro? For starters, we recommend saving the color for your sweaters, layering with a fleece vest under your puffer jacket. Depending on temperature, have the vest unzipped to show of the colours underneath. Remember – the colour of you sweater can’t be too bright. Use the Original Blue or Tumbled Raw Denim No.2 to pair with boots of your preference.
